Aromatherapy
FAQ
|
What is aromatherapy?
It is the use of pure essential oils, extracted from many parts of the plant (flower, leaf, blossom. petal. twig, resin, root, bark, seed, and rind) for enhancing wellness.
It is an art and a science. The science applies to understanding the unique chemical and therapeutic properties in essential oils. The art applies to blending the oils. Creating blends requires an understanding of each essential oil's properties and lots of experience.

What are essential oils?
They are natural substances, which are extracted via distillation from tiny molecular sacs of each botanical that are part of the plant's immune system. Essential oils are highly concentrated extracts that contain hormones, vitamins and antiseptics that work on many levels.
All essential oils, to a greater or less extent, exhibit the following characteristics: antiseptic (prevents or combats infections); bactericide (kills bacteria) inhibits growth of bacteria and promotes cell rejuvenation when applied to the skin.
|
How are they extracted from the plants?
They are extracted in a variety of methods. Most common is steam distillation. Careful low-hear and slow distillation is preferred to keep the therapeutic properties of the oils intact. Cedar is from the bark ginger from the root, frankincense the resin, orange from the rind, eucalyptus the leaves, and rose from the flowers.
Why are they so important?
Essential oils have been used around the world in the fields of psychology, medicine, cosmetology to promote health and well-being. Used since antiquity, they are a valuable contribution to alternative, holistic care. Used for colds, coughs, muscle aches, insomnia, stress they are part of an effective health maintenance life-style.
Where to they come from?
Tea tree comes from Australia, the finest lavender from France, and peppermint from England, ylang ylang from Madagascar, rose Bulgaria and turkey. Jasmine from Egypt and India. Sweet orange from the US. The purest essential oils are from controlled organic cultivation and wild grown plants found in a variety of climatic and geographic regions throughout the world.

NOT ALL OILS ARE CREATED EQUAL
Many people are not aware that there are several grades of essential oils and that LESS THAN 1% of the oils imported into the USA can be considered of the highest 'therapeutic' grade for the use of aromatherapy. The lower grades are used for industrial purpose (fragrance, food, laundry detergent, toiletries). They can have an appealing fragrance, bur they are synthetic usually cut with toxic solvents. They do not produce the beneficial biochemical and electromagnetic effects that therapeutic grade essential oils do. In fact, if they have been adulterated, they are harmful. Pure essential oils are not for everyone. Not all essential oils are created equal. You will pay more for these oils than for synthetic, lower grade, potpourri, laboratory created, fragrance or even your local health store bought essential oils. Here are some criteria for purchasing the oils:
-
The exact Latin botanical name of the plant, indication of its subspecies (chemo type). The method of extraction (distillation, cold press, steam distilled co2 etc).
-
The way the plant was cultivated, the soil quality, when the plant was picked, the chemical constituents of the plant, part of the plant, reputation of grower.
-
The aromatherapy I offer will use only 100% therapeutic grade essential oils.

What do they do?
They easily penetrate the outer layers of the pores, skin and olfactory system carrying vital information to the tissues, organs, blood, memory and emotional centers of the body. They help transport nutrients and oxygen inside the cell, which fortify the immune system. They increase negative ions in the environment and when diffused remove dust particles from the air making them perfect air filtration systems.
